In my last blog I composed about my experiences working at DC as well as Vertigo as well as a few of the books I truly enjoyed from Vertigo. Of program over the history of Vertigo there were a number of books that I did not address, as well as thanks to both my editor, Roger Ash as well as reader, Steven Caplan, I am going to revisit the Vertigo back listing with even more tips of things to read, partially because of books I left off last time because of area constraints, as well as partially because of the tips from Roger as well as Steven. I would likewise like to make a correction from my last blog. since it was published DC has revealed that backlist titles that that currently have the Vertigo dressing (the Vertigo logo, etc.) will continue to have it in future printings as well as will not be transferred to their Black label imprint. So at least in some fashion Vertigo will continue to exist.
Sandman
Obviously, one Vertigo’s biggest success stories was Sandman by Neil Gaiman. While Sandman did not begin out as a Vertigo title it was (along with Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing) ,part of the reason Vertigo was produced was to differentiate these books as something different from the traditional DC Universe. just like Swamp Thing, I do not believe (actually I know, with the possible exception of Neil) nobody believed that Sandman would ended up being the iconic series that it has become. Sandman was not a new character in the DC mythos. He very first appeared in the 1940s as a criminal offense competitor in a gas mask, a gas gun as well as a suit. (For one more excellent series be sure to inspect out Sandman secret Theatre for a contemporary handle the traditional character in a series of excellent secret stories by Matt Wagner as well as Steven Seagle. There are two collections so far as well as I desire DC would surface collecting this excellent series.) There was likewise a superhero version of the Sandman by Jack Kirby as well as Joe Simon from the late ‘40s, then one more Kirby Sandman revival in the mid-‘70s in addition to other different attempts to utilize the character. Neil’s handle the character was different from all of these other versions, as well as Gaiman was able to produce a whole world for his Sandman as well as incorporated a number of other characters from DC’s past (mostly the secret titles) such as Cain, Able, Brute as well as Glob. Gaiman’s take was a wonderful fantasy story with a deep horror undercurrent. The fundamental story is about Sandman, who is the dream master together with his household members, including perhaps his most iconic character, Death. The stories are so rich as well as complex I might never do them justice by summarizing them here. The book ran for 75 problems as well as was drawn by a number of skilled artists, including Dave McKean as well as Charles Vess, to mention just two. The entire series has been collected into ten trade paperbacks which have just recently been reissued in new 30th anniversary editions. There is likewise a prelude Sandman story called Overture that was done many years after the original series that tells the tale of exactly how the opening scene in Sandman #1 came to be. I likewise want to mention that Neil did an amazing task of weaving the history of all of the earlier incarnations of Sandman (as well as many other DC historical nuggets) into his stories. If you sit down as well as checked out the entire Sandman saga I can promise that you will be blown away. Also, Sandman has spun off a number of side books with different characters from the series, or connected into the Sandman universe, alas none of them have ever discovered the success of his original Sandman. now go checked out them!
Doom Patrol
Doom Patrol is one more early 1960s superhero team of three misfits that came together under their wheelchair bound leader, the Chief. The series was a fun run that was fondly keep in mind by comic fans as well as had a number of attempts to update as well as restart the series over the years. unfortunately none of these ever got that far or were that great, till Vertigo introduced perhaps one of most surreal comics of all time under writer grant Morrison. At the time this book was coming it out it was one of my preferred titles since it was so unlike anything else out there. It is a mix of super-eroes on acid as well as then stuck in a sensory deprivation tank. however contrary to what you may believe from this description, these stories are great. It is typical in these stories to discover truth bent as well as for the Doom Patrol to loose members as quickly as Superman beats up a villain. I liked exactly how Morrison was able to tell tales that seemly would make no sense if I was to explain it here, however when reading the story it makes perfect sense. I would think about this book as great as Sandman in a totally different way, however like Sandman, reading the series will make a lifelong effect on you. While Sandman would spawn a number of other series, Doom Patrol did not have that type of success, with the exception of flex Mentallo miniseries, it never truly went much further than what Morrison wrote. however I should note that the recent DC television show Doom Patrol was greatly (if not wholly) based on Morrison’s writings, while having little, outside of the primary four characters, in typical with the 1960s series. (DC just recently when once again revived the Doom Patrol under their young animal imprint, however it has not caught on like Morrison’s Doom Patrol did). once again well worth reading as well as is offered in three trade paperback collections.
Shade the altering Man
After the Doom Patrol, perhaps the most mind bending series Vertigo did was shade the altering Man. In some methods I liked shade more since of the lovely art by Chris Bachalo even though Peter Milligan’s story telling is likewise top notch. just like both Sandman as well as Doom Patrol, shade was originally a series in the mid-1970s by Steve Ditko. While Ditko’s shade is the basis for Milligan’s Shade, as well as he draws from Ditko’s vision liberally, he goes in a much different direction. The very first story includes shade coming to earth from his house Meta (in a different dimension) as well as satisfies Kathy George, as well as from there they are off on a strange trip across America. While not an overtly political series, there is definitely an undercurrent in these stories about what America had ended up being at the time of Milligan’s writing. This is a perfect buddy book to Sandman as well as Doom Patrol for the visitor looking for a modification from the typical comic fare as well as all three books tell an legendary story over a long series comics. as well as all three series will difficulty the visitor as these are not your villain of the month type of stories. Unfortunately, only the very first 19 problems of shade were ever collected, so the vast majority of the series has never been reprinted.
Even with two blogs dedicated to Vertigo, I have barely touched the vast amount of books they published over the years. There are a number of titles that deserve special interest as well as perhaps I will dedicate one more blog down the road depending upon comments on this blog. If you have any type of tips or comments or disagreements (such as Steven Caplan had), I can be reached at MFBWAY@AOL.COM or on Facebook at Wayne Markley. While I am composing about disclaimers, whatever I have right here is my opinions as well as do not show the thoughts or opinions of Westfield Comics or their employees. That is all the words for this time, so…as always,
Thank you.
